F minor

About This Artwork

This acrylic on paper translates the F minor triad into geometric color through chromesthetic mapping. The chord's three notes — F, Ab, and C — become magenta, blue, and red, each assigned through the circle of fifths. Painted on sixteen by twenty-one centimeter paper, the work belongs to the Research on Harmony sub-series within the Synesthetic Explorations collection, where each variation isolates a single chord and renders its harmonic character as visual form.

Dark blue-violet tones fill much of the composition, anchoring a cluster of interlocking geometric shapes in the center and left of the surface. A large teal-blue curved form occupies the upper middle ground, while a deep magenta-red arc sweeps down the right edge. Orange and russet shapes nestle within the central arrangement, and a bright royal blue field spreads across the lower portion. A prominent white circle sits near the bottom center, and a small cyan circle floats above the composition. The pale cream and silver tones of the paper ground remain visible along the right side and corners, framing the denser color activity.

The spread voicing of the F minor chord — with its notes opened across the keyboard — finds a visual equivalent in this spatial arrangement, where colors separate and recombine across the vertical format rather than stacking tightly. Acrylic on paper allows flat, opaque color fields with clean edges between shapes, giving each mapped tone a distinct presence. The artist's monogram appears at the lower right.
