D Major

About This Artwork

This work explores the visual translation of the D Major triad through chromesthetic mapping, part of the Synesthetic Explorations collection. The piece converts the fundamental chord tones D, F#, and A into their corresponding color equivalents, creating a visual representation of harmonic relationships. The composition investigates how musical intervals can be expressed through color relationships and spatial organization.

Orange tones dominate the composition, occupying substantial areas through chocolate and burnt sienna hues that represent the root note D across different octaves. Yellow-orange appears throughout the surface in darkgoldenrod and goldenrod variations, translating the fifth A into visual form. Yellow-green areas provide contrast through gray tones, representing the major third F#. Very dark gray creates structural anchoring points, while small accent areas of red-orange and yellow add harmonic complexity. The colors organize into curved and angular forms that suggest the spread voicing of a piano chord.

The work measures 15.0 × 21.0 × 0.3 cm and weighs minimal amounts on wood panel support. Created in 2024 as part of the Synesthetic Explorations series, it carries certificate of authenticity number 20241201-0277. The piece demonstrates Quercy's systematic approach to translating musical structures into visual compositions, using acrylic medium to achieve precise color relationships that mirror the mathematical ratios found in major chord intervals.
