Arnaud Quercy is a Parisian artist working across painting, music, and sculpture. His practice is grounded in Ideamorphism — the principle that a work of art does not carry meaning, but triggers it. Each piece is engineered to diffract differently through each person who encounters it.

About This Artwork

This ephemeral sand sculpture explores themes of journey and introspection through site-specific creation on the Mediterranean coast. Part of the Mediterranean Echoes collection, the work transforms natural beach sand into a contemplative portrait that existed briefly before the tide reclaimed it. Created during Quercy's August 2022 residency at Salou Beach, Spain, the piece belongs to a series honoring both jazz legends and poetic figures of travel.

The bas-relief presents a stylized face in profile, its geometric features emerging from the sand with sculptural clarity. A prominent eye, angular nose, and softly curved lips create a figure gazing outward toward an unseen horizon. Warm earth tones dominate the composition—deep browns and sandy ochres that read as natural extensions of the beach itself. At 120 × 150 cm, the monumental scale allows the portrait to command attention while remaining integrated with its coastal environment.

The work embodies impermanent art as both method and meaning. Shaped entirely by hand without lasting materials, each sculpture in the series survived only hours before seawater, wind, or footsteps erased it. This deliberate ephemerality transforms the creative act into performance, with the tide serving as final collaborator. The piece is documented through certificate of authenticity #20221231-0047 and photographic records that preserve what the ocean could not.
