Paris rooftops, Norman cliffs, Luxembourg chairs. Interior architect by training, Caroline Lopez draws what others walk past — the layered geometry of a quartier, the weight of a wave against chalk, an empty seat holding the shape of absence. She has exhibited across Paris salons and galleries since 2014.
Her work is currently exhibited at Art Quam Anima, 28 rue du Dragon, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris.
About This Artwork
"Le Coq de St Menard" takes a nighttime view of the rooftops around the Église Saint-Médard, anchored by the church's rooster weather vane against a full moon. Caroline Lopez works from Parisian sketches, reworking and assembling them in the studio to produce compositions that document a personal and collective memory of the city. This piece belongs to the Paris collection and was completed at her Rue du Dragon studio in January 2025.
The composition looks upward along the central axis of a church spire, where the rooster silhouette is positioned directly against the moon's pale disc. Haussmann-era facades rise on both sides — mansard rooftops, stone dormers, and stacked chimney pots rendered in open contour linework against the reserved cream of the paper. The sky fills with dense ink work, establishing a dark ground from which the buildings emerge in relief. Bare branches occupy the upper corners in white line on dark, their fine detail contrasting with the solid architectural masses below. Several windows carry warm amber light, small points of warmth distributed across the facades. Dense silhouetted vegetation anchors the lower portion of the image.
This work is catalogued under the reference CLO0016 and is part of the Paris collection at Art Quam Anima. It was created in January 2025.
