Paris rooftops, Norman cliffs, Luxembourg chairs. Interior architect by training, Caroline Lopez draws what others walk past — the layered geometry of a quartier, the weight of a wave against chalk, an empty seat holding the shape of absence. She has exhibited across Paris salons and galleries since 2014.
Her work is currently exhibited at Art Quam Anima, 28 rue du Dragon, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris.
About This Artwork
Caroline Lopez built her Paris practice on an architectural eye and a deliberate refusal of the obvious view. Trained at the École Camondo as an interior architect, she takes sketches made in the city and reworks them — recombining, adjusting, and resolving them into compositions that read as personal interpretations of urban space rather than transcriptions of it. This work turns that process toward Montmartre, one of the most drawn and photographed neighborhoods in Paris, and finds an angle that sidesteps the picturesque. The mill appears not as a landmark to be centered and admired, but as one element in a steep, tilted mass of rooftops and facades. The work belongs to the Paris collection.
The composition is drawn on a strong diagonal. Buildings occupy most of the picture plane, their facades rising at an angle across the sheet. Ink linework handles all the architectural detail: rows of shuttered windows, stone courses, dormer windows, iron railings, chimneys rising in clusters at the top. The windmill appears in the upper right, its sails rendered with the same fine, unhurried line as the building below it. Across this structure, watercolor washes lay in pale, muted tones — warm creams and beiges for the stone, soft pinks spreading across the background on both sides, a pale green in the upper left. A single window near the center carries a warm yellow glow, with what appears to be a small balcony planting in pink directly beside it. The overall palette is restrained, the color working as atmosphere around and behind the ink rather than competing with it.
